Income tax official arrested for bribery

taxNew Delhi: The CBI has arrested a deputy commissioner in the income tax department and his employee from Haryana on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs.2 lakh from a businessman to not impose a heavy penalty on him, an official said on Sunday.

Nitin Garg, who is posted in Sirsa district of Haryana, was caught red handed with his employee while accepting the bribe on Saturday night, Central Bureau of Investigation’s press information officer R.K. Gaur told IANS.

“A CBI team also carried out raids at the residential and official premises of Garg and recovered Rs.15.6 lakh in cash, 1.6 kg of gold, diamonds worth Rs.60 lakh, silver worth Rs.5 lakh, and documents related to 26 bank accounts in his name and of his family members and two lockers,” the officer said.

The two have been booked on charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI did not disclose the name of the employee.

The CBI official said that the complainant, an owner of a private firm in Sirsa, had alleged that Garg issued a notice in his name seeking certain information under the Income Tax Act for the assessment year 2013-14 and demanded a bribe of Rs.2 lakh for not imposing heavy penalties.
