Petition against DGP Javeed Ahmad: Hearing tom’row

Lucknow: The petition filed in Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court by activist Dr Nutan Thakur against appointment of UP DGP Javeed Ahmad shall be heard tomorrow (06 January) by the bench of Justice A P Sahi and Justice A R Masudi. The petitioner’s counsel is Asok Pande.

The petition says that Sri Ahmad has been appointed superceding 13 IPS officers from UP Cadre senior to him, of whom 08, are actually working in the State government itself and are available for the State government for consideration, while 04 IPS officers are on Central deputations.

The petition says Sri Javeed was given priority over these 08 IPS officers as against the Supreme Court ruling in Prakash Singh vs Union of India which says that the DGP shall be selected from amongst the three senior-most officers of the Department empanelled for promotion by the Union Public Service Commission on the basis of their length of service, very good record and range of experience for heading the police force.

Nutan has said that whenever there is any deviation from the law of the land, it gives bad signal and sets bad precedence, giving an inkling of “Quid Pro Quo”, hence not being legally empowered to hold this position, Sri Javeed shall be directed to be removed from this post.
