MP from Pauri Garhwal Tirath Singh Rawat to be new Uttarakhand CM, announces BJP

BJP has announced Tirath Singh Rawat as the new chief minister of Uttarakhand. He will replace Trivendra Singh Rawat who resigned on Tuesday. Speculation is rife that the BJP leadership asked him to step down, reportedly over ‘poor performance’. Several BJP members are said to be ‘unhappy’ with his style of functioning.

The decision was taken at the legislative party meeting of the BJP in Dehradun.

Addressing the media, Rawat thanked the party for giving him an opportunity to serve the state.

Tirath Singh Rawat, 56, is a BJP MP. He was the chief of the party in Uttarakhand in 2013-15 and also an MLA from the state in the past.  His name was picked over prominent candidates including Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat.

Tirath Singh Rawat has the task of leading the BJP into polls due in February with just about a year to turn things around. Like his predecessor, he too is low profile and not known to be a mass leader.
