Avenger Endgame became the highest grossing movie in the world.

Avenger Endgame was a box office powerhouse when it released back in April, dragging in a near record-breaking amount of money–but despite its monster opening, the movie wasn’t quite able to take the box office earnings record from another enormous movie: director James Cameron’s Avatar. According to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, that situation as changed, however, with Disney announcing at San Diego Comic-Con that Endgame has overtaken Avatar’s box office record.

All in all, Endgame has grossed $2.79 billion at the global box office, besting Avatar‘s total by only about $1 million. Avatar needed a mere 41 days to beat the previous record holder, Titanic (also directed by Cameron), while it took Endgame 85 days to get past Avatar.

In India, Endgame stands as the highest grossing Hollywood film ever with lifetime box office collections of ₹373.22 crore. It had taken the Indian box office by storm, minting Rs. 157 crore within three days of release, easily raking in the highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in the country ever. The record for the highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in India was previously held by Avengers: Infinity War (₹94.30 crore), the previous installment to Endgame. The new film had earlier clocked in ₹52 crore on Friday, the highest opening day of all time for a Hollywood film in the country.

Interestingly, in India, Endgame was released in just 1,700 theaters, which is negligible compared to the 4,500-5,000 screens notched up by big Bollywood films. However, the opening day collections of Avengers were the third highest ever in India after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Rajinikanth’s science fiction flick 2.0.
