Professor Surya Kant writes to CM urging cracker ban in UP this Diwali

Lucknow: National president of Indian Chest Society, Prof Surya Kant, on Monday wrote to chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi seeking ban on Diwali firecrackers.

Prof Surya Kant who is head of the respiratory medicine department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in the letter cited that there are 50 lakh asthma patients in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and around 60 lakh people suffering from either bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) that are hugely affected by pollution caused by firecrackers.

 The letter also states that last year around 31% people had complained of cough and breathlessness and around 50% had life danger due to cracker burn injuries.
The professor quoting Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) has said in the letter that against 2015’s data in 2016 there was an increase of around 152% in the pollution levels.
The respiratory expert has thus sought a fire cracker burn from the state government on the lines of the recent Supreme Court order for Delhi.
