christmas-in-indiaLucknow:Christmas also popularly known as ‘Bada Din’is being celebrated with  fervour across the country with special prayers, hymns, and masses in churches, besides the traditional spread of delicious food.

In Christian households, preparations for Christmas begin atleast a month in advance. People get their homes whitewashed and indulge in spring cleaning of the house to give it a fresh new look. Ladies start preparations for the traditional Christmas cake which is anxiously awaited not just by the entire family but also by the neighbors!! Hectic shopping activity takes place as everyone buys new clothes for the festival. Christmas Gifts are also bought for friends, relatives and kids in the family. Biggest festival for Christians – Christmas is also the time for family reunions. People staying in different cities for job or higher studies rush back to their homes to celebrate Christmas with their near and dear ones.

The celebrations began from Thursday night with church services and fellowships where the congregation sang Christmas carols – both western and local songs, composed by the local spiritualists and composers.

“Adequate security arrangements have been made in the country  to hold the festivity peacefully” a senior police official said.

The traditional festive spirit was evident everywhere  as the colourful decorations and illuminations were made by the revellers.

Praise and worship services  and community feasts would be held Friday and Saturday in most of the places.The festive spirit has also gripped the plains, hills and valleys of Christians dominated places.Churches, private and government buildings, schools, markets and homes have been decked up and illuminated.

Various state governments in the country have announced holidays for several days to enable the people to join Christmas celebrations.Governors and chief ministers of various  states have wished the people on the occasion.

Non-Christians are also participating in the celebrations and feasts organised by various Christian organisations.
