The staff members of the Covid centre organised an alcohol party at the facility near Mumbai at a time when covid protocols should be taken extremely seriously.

Mumbai has witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases and a night curfew has been imposed across Maharashtra in a bid to contain the spread. Action was initiated by the authorities after the matter came to light.

Staffer organised party, suspended

The incident took place at the Covid centre at Dombivali Municipal Corporation’s Savlaram Sports Complex. The health department of Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) had asked the contractor, who is running the facility, to suspend the staff member involved in the incident and issued a warning.

The video came to the fore after a passerby recorded the party. The local civic body faced criticism on social media after the video went viral.

“We terminated a staffer involved in it. The others were from outside the hospital,” said Dr Rahul Ghulam, director of the clinic.

As many employees work through the day at the Covid centre, the tent was set up adjacent to it. The incident took place when the staff members were off-duty.
