New Delhi: As we all know that occasion of Guru Purnima is around the corner so today we would like to tell you about significance and importance of this tradition.

The first full moon night after summer solstice is referred to as Guru Purnima according to the Hindi calendar.

It usually falls in the month of Aashad. The day is seen as an occasion for people across India to thank their ‘gurus’ or teachers.

Know, the Guru Purnima is just not celebrated by Hindus but it is also observe by Buddhists to express their gratitude towards their teacher.

According to the Indian culture, the day came into existence after the yogis started worshiping Sage Ved Vyas, who wrote the 4 vedas, deeply revered by Hindus across the world.

 

We all celebrate Guru Purnima but do we know what the occasion is all about?:

 

After Sage Ved Vyas wrote the Rig-Veda, Sama-Veda, Yajur-Veda, and Atharva-Veda, the sage recited it to Lord Brahma, the God of creation or birth and thereby lending them religious importance.

The day is also referred as Ved Vyas pooja, named after saint Vyas. Many people in India, still honour the saint Vyas with a pooja.

As per the popular belief, the devotee can choose to worship any of the two of three main Gods in Hindu religion, Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu.

Earlier, to express your gratitude towards your teacher in the ancient history, one must touch their guru’s feet, fasting and hold a celebration for him or her, it has now metamorphosised into celebration of varied scale and manner. On this day, Schools and colleges hold special events to celebrate.

But many even thank their parents for nurturing and giving knowledge to their kids besides giving respect to teachers. Some people even say that if one’s own life is a teacher, one could honour oneself with a treat too.

The day doesn’t follow on the same day annually, as the day is celebrated based on star positions that the Hindi calendar follows. It will be celebrated on 27 July, this year.
