Perform ‘green good deed daily’ for better environment: Harsh Vardhan

Kolkata, May 9 (IANS) Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday urged everyone to perform at least one “Green Good Deed” everyday to bring about significant changes in the environmental conditions.

Pointing out that a lot of environmental initiatives remain largely symbolic and fail to have any practical impact on nature, the Minister said small behavioural changes in people’s everyday life can be a great step towards saving the environment for the future generations.

“After becoming the environment minister I saw a lot of discussions are held on issues of global warming, climate change, forest cover around the world. A lot of big meetings are organised and environment day are celebrated. But a lot of these events remain symbolic as people tend to forget about them,” he said at an event organised by the Botanical Survey of India at the Indian Museum here.

“Hence after a lot of research, the Ministry has come up with more than 500 small acts that can help improve our environmental conditions. We call them the Green Good Deeds. If every citizen can pursue at least one green good deed everyday, that would be of immense benefit for our future generations,” he said.

Harsh Vardhan, also the Union minister for Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences, inaugurated four galleries in the iconic museum on the Invertebrates, Mammals, Eco-system and Botanicals.

He pointed out that people consider their duty towards the environment to be complete just by planting trees but ideally there are hundreds of other things related to power saving, transport, household etc, that can improve the deteriorating environmental conditions.

“These small acts need slight behavioural change that can be considered as ‘green good behaviour’. To protect the environmental right of our future generations, all of us have a green social responsibility,” he added.
