CBI lodges FIR against postal department officials year after demonetisation

LUCKNOW: CBI on Wednesday lodged an FIR against postal department employees who were posted in Jhansi when Union government scrapped old currency notes.

A team of sleuths were camping in Jhansi to find out whereabouts of Poran Lal Ahirwar, AK Sandilya and Vijay Singh Haryan who were posted as chief treasurer, deputy postmaster and system manager at Jhansi head post office last year.

While working on a tip off CBI had generated through its informers, the agency found out that the three had allegedly altered original official records to exchange old notes to the tune of Rs 21.88 lakh.
 
 The government hot scrapped old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the midnight of November 8 and 9 last year. Post offices were allowed to exchange the old notes with legal tender notes after following a laid down procedure.

The three however, colluded to make money quickly and altered the cash balance book by applying whitener. CBI pressed IPC sections 120(B), 420, 477(A) and 201 besides also adding sections of Prevention of Corruption Act in the FIR. Inspector Ashish Kumar Sanjay of CBI Lucknow anti-corruption branch has been deputed to investigate the matter.
