Doctors Remove 639 Nails From Kolkata Man’s Intestine

New Delhi : A 48-year-old man was recently operated after he complained of stomach pain and vomiting and the doctors removed 639 nails from his stomach.

The Kolkata resident suffers from Schizophrenia and used to gulp nails regularly. after complaints of pain in the stomach and constant vomiting, the man was examined. The doctors found several nails in his intestine in an endoscopy and took him into surgery.

The man had ingested 639 nails which were two inches long and sharp. The nails were displaced in the intestine. However, the doctors confirmed that the man did not suffer any major tearing in the gastrointestinal tract. The patient was operated at the Calcutta Medical College & Hospital and is currently under observation.

the man was brought to the hospital around two weeks ago but was admitted for the surgery on Friday. However, owing to a plasma and-albumin imbalance, the surgery was delayed. Dr Siddhartha Biswas, associate professor of surgery who conducted was quoted saying, “The nails are mostly bigger than 2 inches and are quite sharp. But luckily, there was no major perforation in the GI tract.”

The doctors weighed all the 639 nails that were extracted from the patient. The nails that were displaced inside the patient’s intestine weighed more than 1 kg. Dr Siddhartha Biswas and his team used magnets to pull the nails out of the man’s intestine and the man is getting better according to several reports.
