London: Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya and famous Indian businessman wanted in India for defaulting on bank loans, has been arrested here, informed sources said on Tuesday.

According to sources, Mallya was taken into custody by Scotland Yard and could be extradited to India.

 

 

The sources said, British authorities have informed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about the arrest.

Indian tycoon, who has been declared a proclaimed offender, was today arrested in London by Scotland Yard on India’s request for his extradition.

Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, “Vijay Mallya has been arrested on an extradition warrant.”

Soon after the arrest, a British court granted Mallya bail, according to sources. However, he is expected to remain in UK for the time being.

 

 

The 61-year-old liquor baron, wanted in India for defaulting on loans, appeared before the Westminster’s Magistrates’ Court in London for his bail hearing and is expected to be released on bail later today.

Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to various banks, on March 2th, 2016 had fled India .

An Indian court in January ordered a consortium of lenders to start the process of recovering the loans.
