Bengaluru: Senior Karnataka Congress leader Jaffer Sharief today said that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat will be a good choice for President of India post.

Earlier, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had said that if India has to be made a ‘Hindu Rashtra’, Bhagwat will be a good choice for President. After this, there were discussions on Bhagwat to be in the race of President.

On other hand, the RSS chief on March 29th, gave a resolute reply on the reports and said he works in Sangh Parivar and even if the proposition reaches him, he will not accept it.

On March 27, Raut said, “It is the highest post in the country. Somebody with a clean image should occupy it. We have heard Mohan Bhagwat’s name is being discussed for President. If India has to be made a ‘Hindu Rashtra’, Bhagwat will be a good choice for President. But the decision (to support his candidature) will be taken by Uddhavji.”

Interestingly, the Congress said that it did not support Shiv Sena’s suggestion as it “opposed the saffron ideology”. The Opposition party added that they would come out with its candidate after holding internal discussions. “It is very clear that we do not support RSS ideology.”

Congress spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi told reporters when asked if the party supported Sena’s suggestion. However, within a week of the statement, the Congressman Sharief has written a letter to the PM backing Bhagwat to be the President.

Since President Pranab Mukherjee assumed office on July 25th in 2012 and his tenure is finishing after three and a half months from now, the new President has to be sworn in on July 25 this year.
