Heavy rain lashes Pune: Schools, colleges to remain shut

Pune: At least 11 persons have been killed in various rain-related incidents in the city and surroundings since late Wednesday, officials said here on Thursday.

According to the State and District Disaster Controls, at least five persons were washed away in flood waters in Shivapur. On Wednesday, a wall collapsed in Sakhar Nagar area, reportedly due to overflowing water in a nearby canal, killing five people. At least four people are missing after the incident.

Mr Fadnavis tweeted, “Pained to know about the loss of lives in and around Pune due to heavy rains. My deepest condolences to the families. We are providing all possible assistance needed. State disaster management officials & control room in continuous touch with Pune collector and PMC.”

Water logging was reported from areas like Sinhagad Road, Dhankawadi, Balaji Nagar, Ambegaon, Sahakar Nagar, Parvati, Kolhewadi and Kirkatwadi.

More than 500 people from various water-logged areas were also shifted to safer places following heavy rains in Pune on Wednesday night, a fire brigade official said. He also added that the rescue operation was still underway.

Due to the heavy rainfall and floods, the schools and colleges will remain closed in five of the Tehsils of Pune. Pune district collector Naval Kishore Ram declared a holiday in schools and colleges of Purandar, Baramati, Bhor and Haveli Tehsils of Pune for Thursday.
