Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh at Tihar to meet P.Chidambaram

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday met P Chidambaram in Tihar Jail, where he has been lodged since September 5 in connection with the INX media case. Chidambaram’s son Karti also met his father at the Tihar Jail.

Chidambaram, who is under judicial custody till October 3, is being probed by CBI and ED in cases of corruption and money laundering in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted to INX Media during his tenure as finance minister in 2007.

Congress has been claiming that Chidambaram is a victim of political vendetta unleashed by the Modi government against political rivals. Last week, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel had met Chidambaram at Tihar.

After the meeting, Chidambaram’s family put out a tweet from his handle on his behalf saying: “I have asked my family to tweet on my behalf the following — I am honoured that Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh called on me today. As long as the @INCIndia party is strong and brave, I will also be strong and brave.”

Chidambaram’s family and lawyers are allowed to meet him for 30 minutes every day. The former finance minister has kept his Twitter account active by asking his family members to post his views on the current political and economic developments.
