Transport strike in Delhi-NCR today over hefty fines

New Delhi: Transport strike in Delhi-NCR: Transport unions across Delhi and National Capital Region are holding a day-long strike on Thursday to protest heavy penalties under the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act. The transport strike has also garnered support from ride-hailing services, auto-rickshaw unions, cluster buses and truckers. The transport strike call by these commercial operators is expected to cause a huge inconvenience to commuters.
United Front of Transport Associations (UFTA) general secretary Shyamlal Gola said over 50 transport associations and unions in Delhi-NCR were taking part in the strike.
Many schools in the national capital will be closed in view of the strike called by a transport body, comprising 41 associations and unions, against various provisions of the amended MV Act. Many parents received messages from their children’s schools informing them that educational institutes will be closed on Thursday. There are some schools that have asked parents to make travel arrangements for their children. School buses, autos, cabs, other taxis and buses will stay off the roads today. Parents and office-goers have to commute with their own vehicles or the Metro till 10 pm.
The federation leaders demanded withdrawal of the provisions of the amended Act, such as steeply hiked penalties and limiting the liability of insurer to Rs 5 lakh, among others. Sanjay Samrat, president of the Delhi Taxi Tourist Transporters Association, said they will not be part of the strike.
